Abstract
In 1996 the company CYTRAR S. A.de C. V. acquired legal rights and property over the only hazardous wastelandfill operating in Northwestern Mexico, located south of the city of Hermosillo. However, after two years of operation and a public controversy with a group of civilians and NGOs, Cytrar closed in 1998 when permission renewal to operate the hazardous-waste landfill was denied by the Mexican authorities. What is happening with the hazardous wastes that have been produced in that area since Cytrar closed its facilities?
