Abstract

Climate change and the need to diversify crops in arid regions are driving the evaluation of new sorghum hybrids. In this study, 28 experimental hybrids (H1–H28) from northeastern Mexico and four commercial hybrids (T29–T32) were evaluated during the 2021 spring-summer growing season using a completely randomized design with three replicates. Agronomic, physiological, and yield variables were analyzed. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences in six of the seven agronomic variables, notably in exsertion length. Among physiological variables, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and leaf chlorophyll content showed significant differences. Some hybrids outperformed the commercial controls in yield, suggesting their viability to be introduced in the Mexicali Valley. The correlations identified between agronomic and physiological variables and yield suggest their usefulness as early indicators for predicting crop performance during the initial phenological stages.
