Abstract

We estimate private returns to education in Mexico and the State of Guanajuato using the mincerian approach, calculating both the average return and the return to schooling across different quantiles of the wage distribution. The main results of our estimations are: 1) the average wage for males is larger than the average wage for females, although women stay in school longer than men; 2) in the State of Guanajuato, the wage differential between men and women with similar attributes is larger than the one observed at the national level; 3) at the national level, the returns to schooling are increasing in levels of education, while in the State of Guanajuato the returns to schooling for completed and incompleted degrees have been similar in the past; 4) the return to schooling is larger for individuals at the bottom end of the wage distribution at the national level; 5) In the State of Guanajuato, the returns to schooling are homogeneous across the quantiles of the wage distribution.
