Participatory research on traditional ecological knowledge associated with home gardens in Estado de México

Abstract
The aim of the study is to analyze, through participatory research, the traditional ecological knowledge associated with home gardens in three rural localities of Estado de México. Several authors recognize that the knowledge of peasants and indigenous people contributes to the mitigation of the planetary socioenvironmental crisis. However, even though this type of research has increased, those studies resulting from co-creation between the population, the researcher, and other actors are scarce. The method included systematic walk-throughs, participant observation, questionnaires, interviews, and participatory workshops. Results reveal the interweaving of interactions in the management of the agroecosystem where people interweave environmental conditions, socioeconomic context, and cultural influence; aspects immersed in four stages of knowledge: origin, practice, transformation, and transmission. It is concluded that the biocultural complexity of the knowledge applied in the home garden should be understood from a participatory approach due to the intrinsic society-nature-culture relationship.
