Abstract
Dengue is one of the most prevalent vector-borne viral diseases globally. The aim of this study was to identify knowledge about the mode of spread, symptoms and preventive measures against dengue and to evaluate its relationship with sociodemographic variables in two Afro-descendant communities in the Costa Chica region of Guerrero. A cross-sectional study was conducted and 36 surveys were administered. Nonparametric tests and post hoc analysis were used. A total of 8.5% of the participants had sufficient knowledge about dengue. Marital status” and ‘occupation’ showed significant differences in the level of knowledge. In particular, groups such as housewives and unemployed people showed lower levels of knowledge, which could increase their vulnerability to the disease. We emphasize the importance of designing educational interventions that consider local sociocultural characteristics to help promote preventive behaviors that reduce the incidence of dengue.
