Abstract

The cultivation of coffee is important in the world economy; however, coffee rust caused by the Hemileia vastatrix fungus is one of the most common phytosanitary problems that limits its production and even causes the death of plants in high infections. Therefore, the objective of this study was to establish the spatial behavior of coffee rust populations to contribute to the study of the spatial dynamics of coffee rust. The study was carried out in Amatepec, Estado de Mexico, from September 2020 to August 2021. Samples were collected biweekly in four plots of 0.5 h each. Through geostatistics, it was obtained a spatial distribution in aggregates, spherical models, and distribution maps with infection foci, as well as a high spatial dependence. It is concluded that with this type of research it is possible to identify and forecast the behavior of rust in coffee plantations, the relationship between the biological cycle of the disease, and the phenology of the crop within the epidemiological process.
