Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation of chronic stress and its psychophysiological symptoms as predictors of irritable bowel syndrome in dental students from a public university in Mexico. The study was cross-sectional and analytical. A representative and random sample of 740 students was evaluated in 2022. The Stress Symptom Inventory and the ROME III Criteria were used. The analysis was done through multiple regression. Results showed that chronic stress and physical symptoms (dry mouth and hypertension) as well as psychological symptoms (feeling tied and tendency to be scared by small noises) were associated, and they were predictors of the presence of irritable bowel syndrome. It is concluded that the identification of stress factors could influence a timely diagnosis and prevent their harmful effects on health and on the academic performance of students.
